Core Activities

  • Intelligent Composites Design

We have extensive experience in designing dimensionally stable optical optics and structures for complex optical systems for nuclear physics and government applications.

  • Optical Coating

CMA leads the industry in high performance coating replicated mirrors and can provide optical coatings for mirrors up to 1.8m diameter.

  • Replication Technology

We employ a novel replication technology to produce mirrors. We are lowering the barriers to space exploration by lowering dollar costs and time costs of producing telescope mirrors.

CMA is at the front of high-performance mirror replication technology.

Our Published Work

  • Replicated carbon fiber RICH mirror for AMS-02

Replicated carbon fiber RICH mirror for AMS-02

Presented are results of a fabrication program to produce the Ring Imaging Cherenkov, RICH, mirror for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-02, which is to be placed on the International Space Station. CMA measured the surface roughness…

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Optics Quality Assessment for Lightweight Deployable Optics

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Optics Quality Assessment for Lightweight Deployable Optics

The Naval Research Laboratory and Composite Mirror Applications (CMA) have been working together for several years on the development of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) optics and telescopes.

  • Naval Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) upgrade with lightweight telescopes and Adaptive Optics

The portability of meter-class telescopes has been limited by the weight of the mirror, tube assembly and the mount required to provide pointing and tracking. The portability…
